Earvin Johnson Sr., the father of Magic Johnson, died Wednesday night.
He was 88.
Last year Johnson posted on Instagram a touching birthday message about his father:
“People always ask me who I idolized growing up and I always say it started at home. My father was my first hero and I thank him for giving me my work ethic both on and off the court, and for always encouraging me to think outside the box and dream big. I pray you have many more!”
Magic released a recent thank you on social media to all of the condolences received by fans via a statement on social media.
"From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for the outpour of prayers, love and condolences you've extended to my family and me during this difficult time."
"My father had a passion and love for Michigan State University, young people and education. My family and I have decided to honor his legacy by creating the Earvin Johnson Sr. Scholarship Fund for incoming minority students at Michigan State University.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, if you would like to donate, please send checks made out to Magic Johnson Foundation and include Earvin Johnson Sr. Scholarship on the check. They can be mailed to the address below."
